Is it a bird, is it a plane or is it a decoration? What exactly is Bunting

February 1st, 2010

Today bunting is a known as a number of pre-spaced brightly coloured triangular shaped small flags sewn on a string, used for street parties, special events and decorating car forecourts. The term Bunting derives from the material it was originally manufactured out of called buntine, which was a worsted lightweight wool fabric, used onboard Royal Navy boats. Originally not connected together by a string or rope bunting were small flags used as a form of communication between boats. The most famous message ever sent using this method was by Admiral Nelson on HMS Victory at the battle of Trafalgar and read “England expects that every man will do his duty”. The word itself comes from the Middle English term for the fabric, which was bonting, which then later changed to buntine and the eventually bunting. Historians aren’t sure how far back bunting goes but its been depicted in many painting dating back to the crusades and maybe even earlier in China.

Bunting is also a lowland farmland bird native to Europe or North America that’s usually seen in hedgerows, sat on fence posts or foraging for seeds and inserts. The Corn Bunting (Emberiza calandra) part of the Passerine bird family has just been classified as a red list species by the RSPB with only an estimated 8,000 to 12,000 remaining in the wild. The server winter of this year hasn’t helped the species with snow laying on the ground for nearly a month many bird groups have struggled to get the food they need. For more information on how to help save the Corn Bunting please visit the RSPB website. – click here

A street party is not a party without colourful Bunting

May 21st, 2009

As part of the ‘Streets Alive’ campaign to promote the street as a social place, Portfolio Display are proud to be one of their main suppliers of ‘Bunting’ for their build up to the national day of street parties held on the 19th of July.

Streets Alive work with communities, councils and voluntary groups in order to create a social place that everyone can enjoy, literally on their doorstep. The idea is to close down the street to traffic for a whole day in order for people to come together as a community and take back what is rightfully theirs. For something that is so accessible to everyone but yet completely restricted it’s important to make the most of these opportunities when they arise.

If you want to celebrate this special day then how about letting Portfolio Display help you out. We stock a huge range of Bunting in many styles and sizes and can even produce personalised bunting for that extra special touch. We also manufacture colourful vinyl Banners that are very cost effective and personalised flags printed using strong vivid colours. We have been supplying bunting for street parties for over 20 years so you can trust us to deliver the products that suit your needs. As an addition we also stock a great range of national hand waving flags, enough to get anyone in the mood for a celebration!

Do you know Jack about the Union Flag? Our National flag explained

May 19th, 2009

The Union Jack or Union Flag is the national flag of The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The current design we all know and love has been about since January 1st 1801. We know it as the Union Flag as it represents King George III administrative union of the 3 kingdoms of the British Isles. England, Scotland & Ireland (Northern Ireland Only Since 1921). The flag design itself consists of the Cross of Saint Andrew overlaying with the Cross of Saint Patrick with the Cross of Saint George on top. Why wasn’t Wales included in the Union Jack? At the time Wales was a principality ruled by a prince, therefore could not be included in the union. Some residents of Wales call to change the flag and included the Welsh Dragon in the Centre of the Cross of Saint George.

The ‘Union’ part of the name simply came from union of the three countries. The ‘Jack’ part however has been used for the flag since before 1600 and its origins are unclear. The main theory is that the ‘Jack’ part may have simply come from the name of King James I or James VI of Scotland. Another idea was when used as a maritime flag at the front of the boat it was called ‘Jack’ by the sailors. Another theory comes from back in 1674 when its was referred to as either “the Jack”, or “Jack Flag” or the King’s Jack. The royalty at the time referred to it as “His Majesty’s Jack” and after that it was officially named the ‘Union Jack’. Historians are still unsure of the origins of the use of ‘Jack’ but are still researching it roots.

At Portfolio Display we offer a large range of Union Jack flags and national flags. Our range includes a variety of materials and sizes from polyester flags to quality machine stitched cloth flags for long-term use. We also offer a great range of national flag bunting, which comes in 9m (30ft) lengths with many countries available to buy securely online.

Portfolio Display featured on ‘Deals on Wheels’

January 14th, 2009

Quentin Willson on the Tonight shows Deals on Wheels

Quentin Willson on the Tonight shows 'Deals on Wheels'

Portfolio Display were proud to supply a range of automotive display products to a programme named ‘Deals on Wheels’ to be aired on ITV.
The host Quentin Wilson will be providing the ultimate guide to the deals from how to get the most money from a trade-in and whether it’s worth ditching the gas guzzler to where to find the best value-for-money second-hand vehicle.

Today is genuinely one of the best times to buy a new or used car, so this is definitely worth checking out. Prices may not stay this low for long. The number of part exchanges on the market is down due to the sale of new cars being low compared to last year. Prices could even start to rise due to lack of supply, so now is a great time to get looking for that bargain priced car.
